5 ingredient Prawn Masala | Shrimp Masala

The 5 ingredient Prawn Masala|Shrimp Masala is probably the easiest sea food recipe you will ever make. It literally has only 5 ingredients: Prawn/shrimp, onions, tomatoes, chili powder, and turmeric powder. It also takes only 30 minutes to prepare this dish.

According to me, the flavor of the seafood itself should dominate the dish, not the spices. I never add too many spices to any of seafood dishes. It is totally up to you to spice up ie., add more chili powder to the prawn masala!

How to make 5 ingredient Prawn Masala | Shrimp Masala?

This prawn masala has the consistency of a thokku ie., thickened, flavorful masala. You definitely need not have any prior experience to make dish. It is very easy to make. Do watch the video. There is no complicated toasting and grinding of spices required in this recipe. No ginger-garlic paste or coconut curry. Not even curry leaves! I am usually relieved when there is not coconut involved in the recipe. It just takes a bit more time to make the dish.

You can use any prawn/ shrimp variety to make this dish. I used 250 grams of prawns in this recipe for which I used 1 large onion and 1 large tomato. You can add more onions and tomatoes for extra flavor. Also, when you sauté the onions, just take time to do it. Let it turn golden brown. This adds more flavor to your dish. You just do not have follow the recipe as it is. Just go ahead make it your own. This recipe is just a guideline with the main ingredients.

Add a little water, not too much, just sprinkle some after you have added the prawns to the onion-tomato mixture to help the cooking process. Once the prawns have completely cooked, turn up the heat and keep stirring, until the masala has reached the thokku consistency (thick).

The 5 ingredient Prawn Masala | Shrimp Masala can be served as a side dish with any seafood curry. I love to have mine with lemon rice. I would say it is best combo ever!! Try it!!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 large Onion finely chopped
  • 1 large Tomato finely diced
  • 250 grams cleaned prawns
  • 1 tbsp Chili powder or as required
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt as required
  • oil as required

Instructions
 

  • Clean, devein, and wash the prawns/ shrimp
  • Finely chop the onion and dice the tomato
  • Add oil to a kadai/or pan
  • Once the oil is hot, add the chopped onions and sauté until it turns golden brown
  • Now add the chili powder and turmeric powder. Mix everything well. Sauté for a minute.
  • Now add the tomatoes. Mix everything.
  • Let the tomato-onion mixture thicken up
  • Now add the prawns/shrimp and salt. Mix everything. Sprinkle water if necessary
  • Let the prawns cook completely and also let the masala thicken up.
  • Turn off the heat and serve hot.
