Mango Lassi- Indian style mango drink

Well, its officially summer in India, apart from showering like 10 times a day to beat the heat, it is also time to enjoy King of fruits- Mangoes! Indian summer is very hot and humid and you need to keep yourself hydrated. Apart from drinking a lot of water, we also enjoy home made cold drinks such as lassi, lemonade, buttermilk, sugar cane juice etc. to keep the heat at bay. Today, I am sharing with everyone the recipe to my simple Mango Lassi, an Indian style cold drink, that is made with ripe mangoes and yoghurt/ curd.

Lassi is a famous Indian drink that is made with home-made yoghurt/curd. The yoghurt/curd is beaten until is frothy along with sugar, milk, ice cubes, and a pinch of cardamom powder. It is just yummmm!!

India is the largest producer of mangoes in the world and there are a hundreds of varieties of mangoes. Here is an article that lists the 12 most famous varieties of mangoes in India. Each variety has a name and for the life of me, I cannot differentiate one variety to another (I don’t care)! It is a ripe, juicy, and sweet mango, just eat it!! We Indians love to consume mangoes in any form. If its unripe, we make curry or pickle it (click here for recipe) or just eat it with a side of chili powder and salt mix; if its ripe, just eat it or make a smoothie, or a milkshake, or add it to the lassi!

How to make Mango Lassi?

Mango lassi is very easy to make. I used one whole mango and about a cup of yoghurt. You can either use sugar or honey to sweeten the drink. Add a pinch or more of cardamom powder, and the lassi will taste heavenly! You can have this Mango Lassi any time of the day. Hope you will enjoy having a mango lassi this summer!

Happy cooking!

  1. I have 2 mangoes I bought this weekend in Orlando. I bit into one and it was a bit on the sour side, so I think I’ll make this. I’m originally from Jamaica and we have lots of mango varieties too. Yum. 😊

It was awesome. My picky teenager loved it. It is now a staple for us as it is both healthy and refreshing.
